Digital Pregnancy

The days when you had to go to a doctor for an expensive test to diagnose pregnancy are long gone. Today you can go into any drug store, mega mart, or even some convenience stores, and buy a pregnancy test that is as reliable as the ones they use in medical offices. When a woman is pregnant, she produces a special chemical known as human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG. A urine pregnancy test consists of a strip of absorbent material surrounded by a plastic case. This absorbent strip is impregnated with chemicals which react to other chemicals. There are usually two different chemicals in the strip. The first one reacts to the presence of urine. This is usually the control line which lets you know that the test was working properly. The second chemical in the strip reacts to HCG. When HCG is present in the urine, it reacts with the chemical in the absorbent strip to produce a positive result. A digital pregnancy test actually contains a small battery which powers the digital display. It is only the display that is different with a digital pregnancy test; the underlying chemical reactions are the same. Knowing this, it may not make sense to spend extra money for a digital readout. The amounts of HCG that a pregnancy test can detect vary from test to test. HCG levels increase in your blood and urine on a daily basis once your pregnancy has begun. Usually it takes at least 10 to 14 days for enough HCG to be present in your urine to be detected by a urine pregnancy test. Blood tests are more sensitive, but they are also more expensive and can be uncomfortable. Blood tests for pregnancy are usually ordered to monitor HCG levels rather than merely to detect their presence. It is possible to get a “false negative” on a urine pregnancy test. A false negative means that you get a negative response but you are actually pregnant. This usually occurs early in your pregnancy which HCG levels have not risen to a detectable amount. It is also possible, though less common, to get a “false positive” on a urine pregnancy test. A false positive means that you get a positive response when you are not, in fact, pregnant. This usually occurs in response to medications you may be taking, such as fertility treatments. Generally, however, if a pregnancy test says you are pregnant, you can rely on the results.

And I didn’t even know about it, since I’ve stopped watching TV to better fulfill my online media addiction. But last night, I re-visited my college years and watched some re-runs of The Hills at a friend’s house. After the credits rolled, comments began appearing all over the screen as the episode played, like Tweets! At first I thought it was a bit annoying and distracting. However, since I couldn’t avoid reading the comments on the screen, I realized they were actually somewhat humorous. I also realized that this new addition of viewer comments adds to the essence of the show itself- girls talking about their friends and discussing all the drama… the show’s basis is talk, and way too much of it. So why not add some more? This is probably old news, but still felt it was worth a post. Are there any other social TV happenings that I don’t know about? And how long has MTV been doing this?

Social Networking, huh

What’s going on now with social networking sites applications is similar to what happened with email. The signal to noise ratio is rapidly becoming more noise than signal, and it’s frustrating to watch happen. Let’s take Twitter for example: like any form of communication, it has it’s uses for some people, but like most new forms of communication, it gets abused at first – kind of like when your mom first gets email and she spends the first year forwarding you jokes and urban legends. I think we’re at the high-water mark of Twitter abuse and maybe 2009 is the year when people stop twitting everything they do/see. Or maybe Twitter will just die – they have no business model after all – and this will all be moot. Back to Facebook: I went through my “friends” list and removed about two dozen people. I thought I could be all clever and create a list and move some of my business contacts into it, but it seems with lists you don’t get much control over what they see…so it seems that putting people into the limited category is still the only option if you want to have your real friends see what’s going on in your life, and your business acquaintances see a simpler, more sanitized version. I can’t be the only one that wants to share more of my life with my friends than with people I know in a professional capacity, but Facebook sure doesn’t seem to understand that.

Red Bull is an energy drink that currently dominates the U.S. market and is sold around the world. Red Bull claims to boost metabolism, improve performance, increase concentration and reaction speed, and increase endurance. Red Bull is used mainly as a performance enhancer but is frequently used by those trying to lose weight as the caffeine provides a thermogenic benefit. Thermogenesis is a process in the body that speeds up metabolism and burns adipose (fat) tissue. The stimulant effect of the caffeine also increases activity levels which help to burn calories. Red Bull has had a checkered history since it was first produced in 1997 on a large scale. It has been incorrectly condemned for its high caffeine content which is actually about the same as the average cup of coffee. Small scale clinical studies have been performed on Red Bull and have had mixed results. Some of the studies link the product to heart disease and high blood pressure, but why I am talking about Red Bull here which it is not related to the digital media at all is because I did not sleep last 72 hours regarding to the finals and this is my magical friend for tonight. Home Buying in the New Area

Have you ever thought that how was home buying like twenty years ago? Now a day you will contact a realtor or yourself sign in one of the websites. If you have a realtor, he/she will send you hundreds of links according to your criteria, where you want the location, how many bedroom, bathroom, … even if you are using the website you will have the option to narrow down whatever you want and then you will be there with tons of pictures, virtual tours, online descriptions, and even the Google map of the house to show you the neighborhood. In this way you may visit many houses without even leaving your chair and then if and only if any of them appeals to you, you may visit that in person. Just compare this to pre-digital era or even many other countries!!! You must contact several realtors because none of them has access to all the listing! Then you have to visit any house that you think might be close to your criteria and it may mean visiting hundreds of houses without even finding the one. Maybe it sounds strange and silly and unbelievable, but the use of digital technology, especially the media made it possible for us to sit in our chairs and buy and sell even expensive stuff like houses.

Maybe we do not realize that how technological advances affects other careers. It is not easy for the entire career to use the technology in an effective way. Using new technology and even the daily tools and instruments that once has been analog and everybody was easily working with that now has become digital and needs training to learn how to work with it!!! One of the first things new digital camera owners want to do is start sharing their digital photos with friends and family. Of course, the easiest way to do that is by email. Most photo-sharing sites will automatically downsize very large images or offer a choice of sizes to the viewer. If you already have personal Web space (check with your ISP), you will find lots of free or inexpensive software to build a web photo gallery for yourself.

It is the modern expression of the ancient art that was continued through generations and then got completed through analogue devises like books, TV and radio, now finds its completion through the digital tools. It can be very useful in education, interaction of different nations, and also families. It cannot replace the necessity of the traditional storytelling especially in the parental children relationship since it cannot convey the spirit.

Digital painting is an emerging form of art which is using computers, software, and digitizing tablet and stylus instead of the traditional tools of painting like oil colors, water colors, and canvas. Digital painting is different from other digital arts in the case of creation of the images. In digital painting the artist creates the image just instead of canvas he/she uses the screen and instead of color and brush uses the software. Even the artist can make the brush style and the desired affects. The softwares are Corel painter, Adobe Photoshop, ArtRage, GIMP, and openCanvas, and they give a similar environment like traditional painting. Most of the artists are complaining about the lack of control over the brush compare to traditional paintings and there are many cons and pros among them. The main positive point is the cleanliness, and easy to work environment that the digital painting provides.

Digital Biology is a website related to marine life. It is an integrative, educational website and is related to the Vancouver Aquarium Beluga (type of whale) Project. The idea is very nice to have a website that allows people to see virtual realities about animals and even integrate with them, but the execution is really poor. Information is too less and there is no tab or even contact us page on the website. The samples short movies are really short and not descriptive but still nice. The goal is to simulate life events of the animals and show the interaction among them and also the interaction between the animal and the viewer. In this simulation the animal can even learn from his own experiences and would be a very useful tool in planning the further studies in a specific species. I think it is a work in progress.

Be careful! You can never guess what you are going to see. I was expecting some form of bionic women or at least something close to it, but I found out that the meaning of digital women is completely different! Digital women is an informative website for the women who are in the workforce, who wants to improve their job, or who need information about loans, starting a business, grants, home businesses, home loans and etc. I think it is some kind of support group who even gives grant!!!! For women owned business! Women can become a member and help each other in business and online every day. What I thought and what I saw!

This website is the first step to have an online billboard for the wine retailer and giving them the support that they need. It is enforced by ecommerce and seems very reliable. On the website you can find how to get wine packages and there is a link that leads to the spirits information and prices from different retailers. The website is very costumer friendly, easy to navigate, but hard to understand for a layman like me. Still I do not know if the website audience is only the retailers on people even like me!! If the audience is public, I think the website is very weak in offering description about different spirits, comparing and contrasting them and eventually selling them. The information on packages and also the philosophy for the web owner are very nice. He believes that the technology is not waiting for any body and it is constantly growing. So it is better for industry to try to catch it in advance!

A sensor-laden, blinking and gurgling robot named Simroid acts as feedback, documenting and alerting the trainee when he or she has dug too deep or accidentally touched the robot inappropriately. The entire session will be record to be later reviewed by professors or students and they can give feed backs later. Just like a real patient, the robot blinks, grunts, and shows responses to discomfort and fear. It is really wonderful that how digital era changed every thing, just think for a second that without all of this technology one of us would have to sit on that dentist’s chair and become a laboratory mouse. It is so amazing that robot have sensor, which allow him or her to shows reaction like a real person that is in dentistry.

Digital Clouds

A giant "digital cloud" that would "float" above London's skyline has been outlined by an international team of architects, artists and engineers, the construction would include 120m- (400ft-) tall mesh towers and a series of interconnected plastic bubbles that can be used to display images and data. The Cloud, as it is known, would also be used an observation deck and park. The unconventional structure was originally envisaged as centerpieces of the city's Olympic village. The inflatable elements of the building would sit on top of slender, lightweight towers, stabilized by a net of metal cables. Damping technology, similar to that used in Japanese skyscrapers to resist earthquakes, would prevent the towers being buffeted by the wind. The structure would also be used to harvest all the energy it produces so I think it would be a zero power cloud. As well as solar cells on the ground and inside some of the spheres, the lifts would use regenerative braking, similar to that in some hybrid cars.

Digital pianos are electronic instruments that reproduce piano sounds. Unlike acoustic pianos, they have no hammers, no strings and no soundboard to produce the sound you hear. Instead, they have electronic sound chips and speakers. There are some nice advantages of using digital piano. Digital pianos usually have an array of features that make them an attractive alternative to an acoustic piano, such as, different types of piano sounds, other keyboard sounds like harpsichord, organ, other instrument sounds like strings, flute, percussion, built-in rhythm capabilities to accompany your playing, the ability to record your performance, the ability to interact with other electronic music devices (MIDI), never a need for tuning, headphones to practice in private, easier portability. But also there are some disadvantages about digital piano compare to analog piano. The problem with digital pianos is that they can't really duplicate the tone and touch of a real piano. Even with today's sampling technology individual notes may be quite accurately reproduced, but the tone of notes sounding together, as in an acoustic piano - with complex harmonics mixing and resonating against a flexible wooden soundboard - cannot be matched. As a result, most music sounds rather sterile played on a digital piano. Digital pianos don't feel like real pianos. Touch Sensitivity and Weighted Action is not the same thing as the sophisticated inner mechanism, or "action", of an acoustic piano. Digital pianos merely simulate the touch of pianos. They don't provide the same feedback or responsiveness to your playing, so your performance range is limited. If you are considering buying a piano for your child, consider this: many piano teachers will not teach students who have reached a certain level on anything other than an acoustic piano. Digital pianos are counter-productive when it comes to technique and dynamic performance. These skills cannot be practiced on a digital keyboard and then applied to a real piano action. It's not the same thing. A piano also represents a stronger commitment to a student, as an opposed to a digital keyboard that may represent the same thing to a child as a computer, an electronic game-station or a CD player. Something else to consider is that an acoustic piano will hold its value far better than a digital. An acoustic piano can last 100 years, while a digital may be obsolete in 5 years and might be hard to even give away by then.

Digital chocolate is a provider for games that can be downloaded on the iphone, Smartphone, PC, or any other platform. It does not have anything to do with chocolate!!! It can be followed on facebook, twitter, or even YouTube and they claim it is customized to your wish! The CEO of the company is Trip Hawkins and he has the silliest weblog that I have ever seen. There is no information about the price or quality and requirement of the game on the main page and you have to choose each game to find some information but again you cannot find anything about the price! Even when you click the “buy now” button, first it will ask about your credit card information without knowing the price. It is getting harder and harder to raise a child in the internet era! The names are luring and the features beautiful, but you never know if they are really selling you something or are trying to steal your identity, or steal your mind.

Digital drug is a CD!!! Which claims to boost the mood and increase the happiness, alert relaxed state of mind, increase visualization skills, increase the confidence and help the audience to get rid of the inhibitors and in one word getting high without taking any known drug? As far as I understood it is not any sort of music or sound, it is a range of different frequencies (to my knowledge some of them even out of range of our hearing) that will tamper with our brain. The website claims that different energies can stimulate different part of the brain and release different chemicals like endorphins and opiates, or increase alertness and concentration. Even the mark for 30 HZ they mention safe marijuana affects!!! Exactly when you think you cannot be more surprised, you will find such a thing!!! Anyway drug is drug and a big No for any wise person! I do not care if it is digital, analogue, liquid or gas! It comes with addiction!

Digital Pet

A digital pet is an artificial companion of human. They do not look like any kind of pet and they are only the hardware that the run on! The pet is used in two forms. It may be goal oriented interaction which means the owner should keep it alive and help it to grow into the higher forms. It needs to be fed, groomed and played. If the interaction is not goal oriented, then the user can build a relationship with the pet and try to know its characters. Some of these pets respond to touch and some can be trained. Sometimes these pets have real visual effects to make it more real. So far the pet cannot reproduce. Some of them are a palm computer and some are games on website. What is the purpose of having a digital pet when we may have a real pet is a big question for me. It is true that we can teach responsibility to our kids or having fun with the digital pet, but we may do the same by adopting a real pet from a shelter and help a real animal to survive, too. What’s next? Digital Baby?!!!

Do not let the name fool you. This website does not have to do anything with ice cream. It is the website of Justin Hollerich, a very young and creative photographer that loves the digital medium. You can find his very beautiful and artistic photo of this artist on his web site. The images are under three categories: people, automobiles, and various. The website is growing and so far does not have so many images, but it has a blog for the images that are not on the website and the artist’s words which need to get out. The artist himself asserted that he has chosen this name for his website because the name stands out and is very easy to remember and it works much better than any visiting card and besides who doesn’t like ice cream. He is right; I found the website because of its funny name and the fact that I love ice cream. In addition to having a good time browsing through some beautiful images, I learned that creativity is a must in the art and in the advertising of the art. Take a look for yourself:

Digital flowers are a course offered by the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC). It is designed to be used in Plant Biology courses. It is accompanied by lecture text and offers very useful information about each family of plants and the subgroups. Any student who has to deal with plants, and memorize the vast list of the plant characteristics will enjoy this website. The First Digital President

During the long and winding road to the White House, there was an interesting side story that played out about which candidate really “got” technology, particularly IT. Obama was portrayed as web-savvy, carrying a Blackberry and regularly using the Internet. In contrast, McCain was seen as out of touch, even personally admitting that he didn’t use a computer or email. And certainly one reason for Senator Obama’s historic victory was his campaign’s unprecedented and innovative use of new technologies, including the Web and social networking. So what do we think here, do you think is it important that we get a president who can use his own computer and has his own email address, and maybe can chat with him on face book or play with him online too!! I don’t know how many of younger people that support Obama did think about these things. I personally think it is not vital but it is important that I know that my candidate knows how to use a computer, especially if that person will become the president of the most digital users and most information users of the world. So here we go, we can call this election “the first digital President” and it is true. Faraway of how much digital media was responsible for electing one of these two candidate, the gesture that Obama showed during his campaigns, shows that being digital and digital lover is one of the factors that may would help him and I think he did well, it helped.

I like this one, as a person that been raised in Iran which is very famous about Rugs which are crafted by hands it is very funny and also surprising that we can order our Rug with any images that we want to on a web site and get it after while. It shows how much we are going forward in digital century. Now even grand mothers can get their grand son and daughter’s pictures on a Rug, which will be use on the floor or can be use as a frame. I think company had a great idea and made it right too. Why not when we have all our pictures anywhere we want it why not on the beautiful Rug. The website also offers digital mat to. Some how when I looked at the name at first I thought they sell some kind of Mat or Rugs that may walk, or talk, but no this is again just about images. A digital pen is a battery-operated writing instrument that allows the user to digitally capture a handwritten note or drawing. Typically, a digital pen comes with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cradle to let the user upload the handwritten notes to a personal computer. The pen looks like a regular ball-point pen and can be used as such, but requires special digital paper if the user wishes to digitally capture what he has written. A page of digital paper, which can be purchased in traditional pad or sticky-note size, has small dots on it that allow the pen to "see" what has been written. Here's how it works: When the user is done writing on his digital paper, he puts a checkmark in the "save" box. The pen vibrates or beeps to confirm that it knows the box has been checked and that the user is done with that page and wishes to save it. Typically, a digital pen can store up to 40 pages of saved digital paper in its memory. Only pages that have been checked will be saved. Most pens save the handwritten data as an image file (GIF or JPEG, depending on the pen's manufacturer) although some digital pens use a proprietary file format. When the user wants to upload his saved notes from the pen, he docks the pen in its USB cradle. The cradle automatically senses the pen's presence, opens the accompanying software application on the user's PC, and transfers the saved files to a specified folder. Many digital pens come with handwriting recognition software that allows the user to import their handwritten notes into typed text. Some of the newer high-end digital pens are wireless, taking advantage of Bluetooth technology. These pens do not require a docking station, but instead send the captured notes or drawings directly the user's PC or cell phone.

Digital camera

The first step is to understand what a digital camera is. With a film camera, collecting light from a particular scene or subject and focusing on film, which reacts chemically when struck by light and is said to “capture” the image, forms an image. What makes a camera “digital” is that, instead of film, it has an image sensor that reacts to light by sending out electrical signals. The camera takes the information from the image sensor and processes and stores it as a collection of pixels in a digital file, usually on a memory card inside the camera. Although the actual process is more complex than this, in essence this is how a digital photo image is made. It’s essentially made up of thousands and thousands of tiny dots, or pixels. When you collect a million pixels, you have a megapixel. The number of megapixels tells you how many pixels the image file has. A camera that captures 8 million pixels, for example, is called an 8-megapixel camera. The number of megapixels a camera features can also help to determine the size photos you can print or the amount of cropping you can do. For example, a 4-megapixel camera may be enough for snapshots, but if you want to print poster-size images or crop heavily, 8 megapixels (or greater) is more suitable. A 6-megapixel camera might be all you’ll need because higher resolution doesn’t necessarily produce better prints. Lenses and other factors affect quality too. But most cameras today have at least 10-megapixel sensors. The size of the sensor, and the size of each individual image sensor element, which corresponds to pixels, can affect photo quality. But remember, the number of megapixels alone doesn’t determine the quality of a digital camera’s images. For many, price is a major factor when buying a camera. In general, look to pay the following for the type of camera you’re looking to buy: For point-and-shoots (subcompacts, compacts, and super zooms), expect to spend $100 to $500. For basic SLRs, expect to spend $450 to $1,500. For advanced SLRs, expect to spend $900 to $2,000. When you’re ready to buy, consider where you will make your purchase. Although some walk-in stores, such as photo-specialty camera shops, might have knowledgeable salespeople, you can’t rely entirely on the staff of walk-in stores to assist you in your purchase. Tbilisi - Surgeons in the Caucasus republic of Georgia have made medical history by replacing the amputated penis of a cancer patient with what they call a "fully-functioning" substitute organ made from skin grafts and a finger. 

 In the 17-hour operation, doctors at the Tbilisi Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery removed the man's left middle finger and used skin taken from his other arm to shape and bind it in place, clinic director Dr Ivan Kuzanov said on Thursday.
 The finger was first "turned inside out" to create a channel which allows conventional urination, and the bone was left "to provide rigidity when needed", he said.
 Twelve days after the operation in December, the man aged "50 to 60" was able to pass water and has since resumed a full sex life. "He is not married but has two girlfriends who are very satisfied with the results," Kuzanov said. The clinic has twice before used a finger for the same purpose but this was the first "fully-functioning" organ built. In future the operation will cost Georgians about $5 000 dollars - "a huge sum for them" - but foreign patients will likely pay far more. - Sapa-DPA

The Bab's remains were hidden for years after he died a martyr's death in front of a firing squad. Eventually, his followers secretly carried his remains to the Holy Land.
